Carolina Fieldstone is a hardscape and landscape company in Charleston. Nikita Parijenko started it at eighteen and runs it the same way now: turn up on the day we said, finish the whole job, answer the phone before the day is out.

Ask anyone here what went wrong with their last contractor and you get one of two answers. He stopped showing up. He would not give a straight price. We built the company around those two, and everything below is how that works in practice.

What we do

Hardscape and landscape. No mystery on the price.

Twenty services in five parts of the yard, fifteen of them hardscape. We sketch the hardscape before we dig, and every job gets a real number before we start.

Surfaces

The way in and the way around. Driveways and walks in pavers, concrete, gravel or oyster shell, on eight to twelve inches of base where cars go and four to six where people walk, and turf that stays green in August.

03Drainage and fence3 services

A yard that held water, and a fence that had given up.

A French drain under the lawn that takes the downspout's water away, new sod where the mud was, and a cedar fence set to depth and strung true.

Price a project like this
Before: A gray house's back yard flooded with standing muddy water in front of an old weathered fence After: The same yard dry and level under new sod, the downspout piped underground, with a new stained cedar privacy fence

04Front yard4 services

Dead shrubs out, a new front yard in.

The failing shrubs pulled out by the roots, the beds re-cut and planted with young hollies and boxwoods in fresh pine straw, new sod laid tight to the walk, then kept on a schedule.

Price a project like this
Before: A white painted brick ranch house with dead, leggy shrubs in bare beds and a thin, patchy lawn After: The same house with young shrubs planted in fresh pine straw beds and newly laid sod

Highly recommend Nikita from Palmetto Landscaping! He was so easy to work with and did an amazing job with our yard. He really listened to what we wanted and made everything look even better than we imagined. We're so happy with how it turned out and will definitely be using him again!

How we price it

You get the number before the work starts, not after it.

Ask a contractor in this city what something costs and you will usually get a site visit you did not ask for, then silence. The complaint people make here is not that the work is expensive. It is that nobody will tell them anything. Below is what decides your number, service by service, before you pick up the phone.

What sets the number

  1. I

    Patios and walkways

Square footage and what is built in

Digging and base work are most of the labor: four to six inches of compacted gravel under a patio or a walk. Fire pits, seating walls and steps are priced each.

  2. II

    Driveways

    Surface, base and the apron

Pavers, concrete, gravel or oyster shell set the range, on eight to twelve inches of base. Tearing out the old drive and building the apron are quoted with it.

  3. III

    Yard drainage

Length of run and where the water goes

The outlet decides most of it. A street or a ditch nearby is simple. A lot with nowhere lower to send the water needs a different answer, and you hear which before we dig.

  4. IV

    Fencing

    Run, material and gates

Most of the labor is in the post holes, so spacing moves the figure more than people expect. Tearing out an old fence is quoted alongside the new one.

  5. V

    Artificial turf

    The base, not the blade

Excavation, crushed stone and drainage are most of the cost and all of the reason the surface stays flat for years.

  6. VI

    Lawn care

    Square footage and frequency

Measured off the property rather than guessed from the size of the house. Weekly costs less per visit than every two weeks, because shorter grass is faster work.

  7. VII

    Ground covers

Area, depth, and what is already there

Cleaning out old mulch and re-cutting the bed edges are quoted on their own lines, so you can drop either one and watch the number move.

  8. VIII

    Sod

What has to come out first

Two yards the same size can be double each other. The grass is the cheap part of a sod job and the ground under it is not.

  9. IX

    Cleanups

Time since the last one, volume out

Those are the two things a couple of photos answer in about ten seconds, which is why we ask for photos instead of booking a visit to look at leaves.

Hardscaping, driveways, patios, retaining walls, irrigation and concrete are priced per job. Whatever the work, you get the figure in writing before anyone starts. It only changes if the job changes, or if we uncover something nobody could see, like buried rock or old concrete, and then we agree it with you in writing first.

How it works

Three steps, and none of them is waiting.

  1. An orange marking-paint line turning a corner on a lawn, a wooden stake with a string line and a tape measure beside itMeasured and marked out
    Step I

    You get a number

Describe the property, or send two photos of it. You get the figure the same day, before anyone drives out to look at it.

  2. A flat bed of compacted crushed stone with sand being screeded along one side against a railThe base, compacted
    Step II

    You get a date

We tell you the day before you commit to anything, so you are not holding a price with no schedule attached to it.

  3. The corner of a finished herringbone paver patio with a charcoal border, joints swept, meeting new sodFinished, joints swept
    Step III

    We finish it

Beds edged, clippings cleared, driveway blown off, gate shut. The yard should look finished, not worked on.

Straight answers

The five questions people ask before they hire anyone.

Ask and you get a figure the same day. What we will not do is dodge the question, which is one of the most common complaints about this trade. Size and the state of the property drive most of it, and we will tell you which of those two is driving yours.

A patio, a walkway or a driveway takes a few days, most of them spent on the base. A weekly cut is one visit. Mulch and cleanups are usually a single day. Sod and turf depend on how much ground has to come out first, and fencing depends on the run and the number of gates. You get the number of days with the price, before you say yes.

The person who prices your job is the person standing in your yard. Call (843) 864-6504 and you get Nikita, not a dispatcher reading a script off a screen.

We clean up before we leave. Spoil and offcuts hauled away, pavers swept, clippings cleared, beds edged, driveway and walk blown off, gate shut behind us. If a neighbor cannot tell we were there apart from the yard looking better, we did it right.

You call the number at the top of this page and you reach the owner the same day. Nothing goes through a ticket queue, and nothing waits for Monday.

The promise

You hear back the same day.

Nikita started the company at eighteen after watching this trade lose customers the same two ways: it stops answering, and it will not name a price. Call this number and someone answers it. Ask what something costs and you get the figure.
